SALES SHOULD DIRECT YOUR PHOTOGRAPHY

As a photographer I prefer to see an attractive female subject with a relaxed non-smiling expression with their lips slightly parted. However, as a business person I realize that large smiles out sell these more alluring expressions by 82%!  As a professional wouldn’t this information cause me to focus my attention on learning how to make my clients relax and getting natural, beautiful smiles?    I loved taking bridal portraits, in unique and beautiful locations, but the best-selling images taken at wedding were the family portraits with the bride and groom.  I see this today with photographers often taking beautiful bridal portraits and yet quickly running through the family portrait which make up most of the sales.

Photographers typically don’t think of what sells to clients when they practice their craft.  Wedding photographers practice how to take scenic bridal portraits, with the bride and groom having very small facial sizes that don’t sell as well as portraits with larger facial sizes.  Senior photographers practice how to take full length images, when images composed from the waist up sell over 60% better.  I am not saying these portraits shouldn’t be taken (often they are effective to use as samples or in advertising), but as a professional photographer you should practice and be the most proficient at the type of portraits that sell the best.

I have been in this profession for years and it still excites me, because I focused the greatest on improving the type of portraits that my clients purchase the most.  Many photographers spend their careers trying to sell clients portraits they really don’t want, simply because those are styles of portraits the photographers likes to take.  This isn’t photography class, this is business. Keep track of what your clients purchase and become a master at providing your clients what they want.  You can do this, or spend a life time trying to selling your clients what you like to take and they don’t want to buy!
